Art Journal

Page One Step by Step

"be joyful in hope"
romans 12:12

I added large sheets of paper under the pages of was working on to protect the rest of the journal.
Then I slathered on lots of gesso.
I left it a bit rough so the texture would show when I added layers over the top.  Let dry completely.

I chose pages from a paperback copy of "Emma".
Get the paint on them any way that works for you,
I used a paintbrush but I think fingerpainting might be a hoot too!

I made my own cloud stencils with Lawn Fawn die cuts on vellum (Sunny Skies and Blue Skies).

Painting on the "landscape".
I made sure to use some heat so all the paint was dry before going on to the next step.
I dabbed on Distress Paint in Broken China using the Hero Arts stencil.
Set aside to let the Distress Paint dry completely.

Die cut the small balloons from the painted book pages using Blue Skies Lawn Cuts dies.

I missed taking a photo when I added the Ink Sprays.
My camera was in the splash zone so I moved it and forgot to take a photo.
In the next step you can see the texture and color that the sprays created.
I used Dylusions Calypso Teal and White Linen.

Use the homemade cloud stencil and a paper towel to "sponge" on white fluffy clouds with Studio paint.
I went over each cloud several times, letting them dry in between coats and left lots of texture.

Using Hero Arts Unicorn White ink I randomly stamped a sentiment from Lawn Fawn Blue Skies.
I wanted the look of "stringy" stratus clouds and the sentiment went with the Bible verse I wanted to use.

I used some Tim Holtz tissue tape to cover the "green hills".

This is a close up of the all the fun stuff happening in the "sky". I must have been napping when I numbered this photo, it seems a bit out of order. Now back to the "green hills".

I added color by scribbling over the tissue tape with Peeled Paint Distress paint.

Now that the background looked how I wanted it was time to add the details.
I used Studio Multi-medium in matte to add the hot air balloons. I didn't use the Lawn Fawn stamps for these because I knew I wanted to try doodling on them. I did use stamps from various Lawn Fawn sets to add some fun hearts and stars to the balloons.

While the balloons dried, I stamped and die-cut some houses with Lawn Fawn Home Sweet Home.

I added detail color to the houses using Faber-Castell Big Brush pens. It's all very messy and fun!
Then I glued them down with multi-medium.

Here again I missed taking photos of the doodling process. Probably because I really had to concentrate on what I was doing. Doodling is very difficult for me so I had to make myself do it and not worry about perfection. The main idea was to outline the clouds, balloons and houses. Add some random doodles to the balloons. The title was computer generated and each word was cut out and glued down. Then my doodle pen (Sakura Pigma Micron 005) came out and I added some doodles to the title. I may need to expand my doodle repertoire beyond outlines, dots and scallops :) The white doodles were done with a Sakura White Gelly Roll pen.

Here's a couple close-ups of the details:
